Lecture 1:Large deviation theory
We will provide a concise introduction to large deviation theory and recover classical statistical physics as a special case addressing steady-state averages for large systems.
Lecture 2:Small, noisy systems: stochastic thermodynamics
Stochastic thermodynamics calls upon large deviation theory to provide ensemble averages for small fluctuating systems. The fluctuations around expectation values are characterized in terms of the cumulants of the probability distribution functions of outcomes of repeated realizations of an experiment. We will see that cumulants admit a multi-linear decomposition and a gauge invariance that can be exploited for a systematic and efficient analytical calculation of the cumulants of all possible observables.
Lecture 3:Linear response in (stochastic) thermodynamics
We will introduce different fluctuation theorems applying to stochastic thermodynamics. On one hand, they are used for an elegant derivation of linear response relations close to equilibrium. On the other hand, they are adopted to determine free energy differences in far-from-equilibrium settings, e.g. in biophysics. The general concepts will be exemplified by discussing the motion of the molecular motor kinesin.
Lecture 4:Negative differential mobility and (quasi-) tight coupling
Currents in far-from equilibrium systems can exhibit a fairly non-intuitive dependence on the thermodynamic forces driving the currents: Currents can decrease and that they may even vanish upon increasing large driving forces. Moreover, in a vast regions of strong driving forces the ratio of any two observables can lock into a non-trivial ratio, in spite of the fact that the individual observables change by many orders of magnitude. The origin of such behavior will be clarified based on explicit analytical solutions of specific model systems.
